Power tool accessories: what fits which tool, and which size to choose

AccessoryFit answers which saw blade, drill bit, grinder disc or sanding pad fits which power tool, and which size or type suits the job. Most mismatches come from three interfaces: the saw arbor, the drill chuck or bit shank, and the grinder spindle thread. Every size, speed and thread on the site is taken from manufacturer spec sheets, manuals and published standards, and each page lists its sources. Nothing here comes from our own product testing; the pages compare what makers and standards bodies publish.

Quick references

Circular saw arbor (US) 5/8 in On the common full-size saw. European saws of the same class commonly take a 30 mm bore.
Drill chuck size = largest shank 1/2 in Impact drivers have no jaws and take a 1/4 in hex shank instead.
Grinder spindle thread (US) 5/8–11 UNC Europe uses M14. Plain-hole discs share a 7/8 in centre hole.
SDS-plus shank 10 mm SDS-max is 18 mm. The two systems do not interchange.

Which specs decide whether an accessory fits a tool?

Three mounting specs decide most fit questions: the arbor or bore of a saw blade, the shank a drill or driver can hold, and the spindle thread or centre hole on an angle grinder. Get one of them wrong and the accessory either will not go on, or goes on and runs off-centre. Each has its own guide on this site; the summaries below give the deciding value and the conditions that change it.

Once an accessory physically fits, two more specs decide whether it may be used. Its diameter must be one the tool is built and guarded for, and its rated speed must be at least the speed marked on the tool. Makita's grinder instructions make the point directly: an accessory that attaches to the tool is not automatically safe to run on it. Every compatibility guide on the site checks all three things in the same order: mount, size, then speed.

Start at the interface, not the logo. Blade or disc: Find diameter, bore and operating limits. Drill or driver bit: Find the holder type and accepted shank. Pad or cutter: Check the attachment and tool-specific limits.
Cross-brand fit depends on specifications, not a shared colour scheme.

What arbor size does a circular saw blade need?

A US 7-1/4 in circular saw blade needs a 5/8 in arbor hole, and the hole must match both the size and the shape of the saw's arbor. Most sidewinder saws, corded and cordless, have a round arbor. Worm-drive saws such as the SKILSAW SPT77WML and DeWalt DWS535B use a diamond arbor, so the blade's diamond knockout has to be removed before the blade will seat.

The arbor changes with blade size. 8-1/4 in and 10 in blades sold in the US use a 5/8 in hole, while 12 in blades use a 1 in hole. Compact trim saws are the odd one out: their small blades take a 10 mm arbor. European saws use metric bores instead, commonly 30 mm on full-size circular and mitre saws and 20 mm on smaller track and plunge saws, with some models sold in both versions depending on the country.

Matching the hole is not enough on its own. The saw manual also fixes the blade diameter, because a blade of the wrong size may not be covered by the guard, and the maximum speed marked on the blade must be equal to or higher than the saw's no-load speed. The guide to arbor and bore sizes for circular saws lists each blade size with its arbor and example speed ratings, and the hub of saw blade guides covers miter, table, jigsaw, reciprocating and band saw blades the same way.

Which drill bits fit which drill or driver?

A drill chuck takes any round or flatted shank up to its stated size, so the chuck size printed in a drill's specs is the largest shank it will hold, not the largest hole it can drill. A 1/2 in chuck is the common size on current cordless drill/drivers and hammer drills, and Jacobs lists its thread-mount keyless chuck of that size as gripping 1/32 to 1/2 in. Reduced-shank bits use that limit to cut larger holes on a shank the chuck can still grip.

Impact drivers have no jaws. They hold accessories in a 1/4 in hex quick-change holder, so the parts that fit are hex-shank driver bits, hex-shank drill bits and hex adapters. Impact-rated bits, which have a torsion zone to absorb torque peaks, also work in an ordinary drill/driver.

Rotary hammers use a slotted SDS shank instead of a chuck. SDS-plus bits have a 10 mm shank and SDS-max bits an 18 mm shank, and the two systems are not interchangeable. A round-shank bit goes into an SDS-plus hammer only through a chuck adapter, which gives the hammer a 1/2 in chuck for rotation-only drilling. For which bit to choose once the shank fits, the hub of drill bits by material sorts bits by what you are drilling, and the buyer guide to drill bits for metal compares bits for steel and stainless.

What thread and centre hole does an angle grinder disc need?

A US angle grinder has a 5/8–11 UNC spindle thread and a European grinder an M14 thread, while plain-hole discs on both sides of the Atlantic share a 7/8 in centre hole. Grinding wheels, cut-off wheels and most flap discs use the plain hole and are clamped between the grinder's flanges. Hubbed wheels, threaded flap discs and wire cup brushes screw straight onto the spindle, so they must match the thread: a US threaded accessory does not fit an M14 spindle, and the reverse is also true.

Speed is the second check. Every wheel carries a maximum RPM, and it must be at least the grinder's no-load speed. Reinforced 4-1/2 in wheels are typically rated 13,300 RPM, and larger wheels are rated lower; United Abrasives rates its largest grinding wheels at 6,600 RPM, far below the speed of a small grinder. The guard is the third check. Cut-off and diamond wheels need a closed Type 1 (cutting) guard, while depressed-centre grinding wheels use a Type 27 guard with inward lip. The guide to angle grinder disc sizes and threads pairs each disc size with its hole, thread and typical rating, and the hub for sanding discs and grinder wheels covers abrasives more widely.

Know the two circles on a circular blade. Outside diameter: Sets the overall blade envelope. Centre bore: Sets the interface with the arbor. Other requirements: Speed, kerf and application still matter.
The outer size and the centre hole answer different questions.

Do inch and metric accessories interchange?

Some do and some do not, and the deciding factor is usually the mount rather than the cutting size. Grinder discs with a plain centre hole are the clearest shared fit: the US 7/8 in hole is the same 22.23 mm bore that European makers list. Saw blades are the opposite case. A US blade with a 5/8 in hole is made for a different spindle from a European saw built for a 30 mm bore, and saw makers forbid bridging the gap with spacers. Makita's EU versions of some mitre and table saws even take a different blade diameter and bore from the US versions with the same model number.

Router collets show how close sizes can mislead. Router makers treat a 1/4 in shank and an 8 mm shank as different sizes that need different collets, and Festool sells a separate collet for its 8 mm cutters. Random orbital sanding discs sold as 5 in in the US correspond to 125 mm in Europe; there, the hole pattern and the hook-and-loop or PSA backing decide the fit, not the nominal size.

Abrasive grit numbers need the same care. US CAMI grades and European P-grades match closely up to about 220 grit and drift apart above it, so above that point a CAMI grade and a P-grade with the same number are not the same abrasive. The chart of P-grade grit equivalents gives the nearest match by particle size, and the drill size conversion chart lines up fractional, metric, number and letter drills, which run in 1/64 in steps on the fractional scale.

Is an accessory safe to use just because it fits?

No. Fitting the mount is the first test, not the last, and the belief that a part which goes on is fine to run is the misconception tool makers warn about most directly. Makita states that an accessory attaching to the tool does not make it safe; its rated speed and its size must also suit the tool.

The failure cases are specific. A 7-1/4 in blade goes onto a 6-1/2 in saw's arbor because both use 5/8 in, but saw makers allow only the diameter marked on the saw, because a larger blade is not guarded properly. A grinding wheel with a lower speed rating than the grinder can break apart. A cut-off wheel under the open grinding guard is not covered on both sides. A StarlockPlus or StarlockMax multi-tool blade forced onto a lower-class tool defeats coding that exists to prevent overload. A thin-kerf blade can bind on a riving knife made for a standard-thickness blade.

When a part does not fit, the fix is a different part, not a workaround. Tool makers forbid spacers on saw spindles, reaming out a grinder wheel's centre hole, and modifying a battery pack to fit a tool it was not made for. The adapters that belong on a tool are the ones its maker supplies or specifies, such as the blade adapter DeWalt supplies with its DWS780 miter saw or the collet sleeves Makita specifies for small router shanks.

A disc can match the pad edge but miss its holes. Matching extraction: The abrasive openings line up with the pad. Mismatched extraction: The same outer diameter can hide blocked holes.
Check the dust pattern as well as diameter and backing attachment.

Are accessories tied to one tool brand?

Mostly not: the main accessory interfaces are shared across brands, and batteries are the big exception. Reciprocating saw blades use a universal shank that Bosch says fits most saws on the market and Diablo says fits all corded and cordless reciprocating saws. T-shank jigsaw blades fit any T-shank jigsaw whatever its brand; Bosch, which created the T-shank, puts the share of current jigsaws its T-shank blades fit at over 90% of current jigsaw makes and models (Bosch claim). Driver bits share the 1/4 in hex, and saw blades, grinder discs and router bits fit by size rather than by brand.

Oscillating multi-tools are a partial exception. Older tools take open universal-fit or OIS-style blades, while Starlock tools take Starlock blades in three power classes. Universal-fit blades do not fit Starlock-only tools, although base-class Starlock blades do fit older OIS tools.

Batteries are tied to their platform. DeWalt 20V MAX packs fit DeWalt 20V MAX tools, Milwaukee M18 tools specify M18 packs, and Makita says its 18V LXT batteries work only in Makita 18V tools, even though all three platforms share an 18 V nominal voltage. Cross-brand systems such as CAS and Bosch's AMPShare alliance are the exception, and only within their member brands. The comparison of cordless battery platforms sets out which packs fit which tools.

Sticking to the designated pack and charger is a fire-safety point as well as a fit point. Fire investigators in Phoenix, Arizona, traced 19 fires in 2024 to power tool batteries among the lithium-ion fires they examined in that city, more than any device type except e-bikes, scooters and other micromobility devices, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. That is one city's investigation count, not a national rate, but it is a reason to give tool packs the same charging care as any other large lithium-ion battery.

Where does the data on AccessoryFit come from?

Every number on the site comes from a manufacturer's spec page, manual or catalogue, or from a standards body such as OSHA, ANSI, ISO or FEPA, and each page lists the publishers it draws on under References. Where only one source states a value, the page names that source in the sentence, so you can tell a maker's own figure from a cross-checked one. Where two makers publish different figures for the same thing, both are given. Where a maker does not state a spec, the page says so rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

The site does not test, rate or rank accessories, and it does not publish prices. Buyer guides compare published specifications and the applications each manufacturer states, and say who each product suits and when to skip it. How products are chosen for those guides is explained on the methodology page.

How do you use this site to find the right accessory?

Start from your tool, not from the accessory. Look the model up in the accessory finder, or read the rating plate and the manual, and note the mounting spec: arbor and blade diameter for a saw, chuck size or holder type for a drill or driver, collet size for a router, pad size and hole count for a sander, and spindle thread and disc size for a grinder. Then work through the sections that match the question you have.

  • For whether a part fits, the what fits which tool guides explain each interface, with US and European sizes side by side.
  • For a size or conversion, the reference charts cover drill sizes, grits, tap drills and screw pilot holes.
  • For choosing between products, the buyer guides compare accessories by published spec for one material or job.
  • For technique, the how-to guides explain choosing saw blades, jigsaw blades, grits, router bit profiles and cut-off wheel types.
  • For a problem, the troubleshooting guides cover burning, wandering bits, swirl marks, vibration and breakage, with the causes manufacturers name.
  • For routers, the router bit guides cover collets, profiles and starter sets.

The interactive tools section holds the accessory finder and a blade selector for circular saws. If your tool is not in the finder, the nameplate and manual give the same specs, and the matching compatibility guide explains how to read them.

Research and free resources

Beyond the fit guides, AccessoryFit publishes free power tool research and data on injuries, battery fires, noise and dust, each figure drawn from public records and free to reuse with credit. For the shop wall, the printable drill, tap and grit charts come as PDFs in US Letter and A4, and the accessory diagram library holds every illustration from the guides. If you grind, drill or sand for long stretches, the daily vibration exposure calculator estimates how much trigger time your hands are taking.

Questions readers ask

What counts as a power tool accessory?

On this site, any part that mounts on a power tool and does the cutting, drilling, driving, grinding or sanding: saw blades, drill and driver bits, router bits, grinding and cut-off wheels, flap discs, sanding discs and pads, plus the chucks, collets and adapters that hold them and the battery packs that power cordless tools. Each one fits through a defined interface, which is why the site is organised around arbors, shanks, threads and pads.

Can a power tool adapter make any accessory fit?

Only an adapter the tool or accessory maker designs for that job. Examples in the fact base include the blade adapter DeWalt supplies with its DWS780 miter saw, Makita's collet sleeves for small router shanks, SDS-plus chuck and hex adapters used in rotation-only mode, and a reusable 5/8–11 UNC adapter that United Abrasives says takes its plain-hole cut-off wheels up to 5 in. Saw makers forbid spacers on the spindle, and no manufacturer statement approving third-party arbor reducer bushings was found, so the site does not recommend them.

Are US and European saw blades interchangeable?

Usually not without the saw maker's own ring or adapter. US blades for common circular, miter and table saws have a 5/8 in or 1 in hole, while European saws commonly take a 30 mm bore, or 20 mm on smaller track and plunge saws. Check the bore and diameter marked on your saw, not the brand of the blade.

Does AccessoryFit test the products it covers?

No. The site compares published manufacturer specifications, manuals and standards, and names the source behind each figure. It has no test results, ratings, scores or prices. Where a maker does not publish a spec, the page says it is not stated.

What should I do if my tool is not in the accessory finder?

Read the rating plate and the spec table in the manual. The plate usually gives the no-load speed and, on saws and grinders, the blade or disc size; the manual adds the arbor, chuck, collet, pad or spindle thread. Then open the compatibility guide for that interface, which explains what the numbers mean and which accessories match them.
